E-media

Stef Desmet

The e-Media Lab’s research is rooted in the interaction between people and applications. This motivating interaction should support the user in his or her further development. The interactive applications are custom designed for and with the contributions of specific target groups such as the elderly, children, and people who are physically challenged.

The design process is based on a multidisciplinary approach, taking into account human psychology and the cognitive and affective processes of the brain. The user is continuously involved in the process: from the generation of ideas until the final user tests.

As far as the interaction is concerned, the e-Media Lab focuses on the use of tangible and embodied interfaces. These are concrete, palpable objects that allow users to manipulate the digital environment. To this end, they contain sensors, actuators, and embedded software. The supporting technologies are software engineering, sensor technology, computer graphics, gesture analysis, audio and video signal processing, mobile communication, and networking protocols.
